In the Spotlight today is a band that sounds at times like Oasis without Noel Gallagher. They’re called Beady Eye and, what? they are Oasis without Noel? Well that’s worth noting…

And at times, it does, which is fine by us.

But at other times, Beady Eye surprises with sonic, soaring rock anthems, to a wall-of-sound, Jerry Lee Lewis-style houserocker called Bring the Light.

The album, which streets today, is led by a glam-rocking single called The Roller –first out to radio.

We’ll let the following clips tell the tale — from a very strong BBC Radio One performance, to the video for the current single…

Matt Morris was passed over by every record label, and as of this writing, still has no distribution deal beyond Amazon and iTunes. That is likely to change…

Despite the support of fellow Mouseketeer Justin Timberlake, Matt Morris could not get distribution for his new album When Everything Breaks Open. Some of the people who passed are now trying to get another meeting.

Thanks to an appearance in front of 16 million people on Hope for Haiti, plus a Tweet from Ellen to her four million followers, things may be about to change for Matt.

It’s another example of an artist who, after being dismissed by the establishment, gets another shot. And it’s a lesson for the radio and records establishment that they’re not necessarily in charge anymore. Thanks to Twitter and guest shots on Ellen and Letterman, the audience gets to decide.

20 million exposures off Hope for Haiti and Twitter alone. Those are big numbers.

A little background on Matt: He indeed was a Mouseketeer with Justin, Britney, and Xtina. But after the show went back to a normal life, and studied music in college. He’s written for Kelly Clarkson (Miss Independent), Christina Aguilera, and Justin.

Here’s the clip from Hope for Haiti, covering Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah

We’ve been arguing that, without multiple revenue streams, most media properties are cooked. Read how Paste came back from the dead, and how The New York Times attempts to stay afloat…

First we told you about The Chaos Scenario — a book that points out big trouble for media’s ad-supported business model. Then we pointed to a potential solution –the need for multiple revenue streams.

Here are two more stories that relate to the topic.

January 20, The New York Times announced a “metered system” that will require online readers to pay for content after an initial free monthly allotment.

Kudos for having the guts to give this a shot. While internet Utopians are crying foul, whining about how it should all be free, as usual they fail to see reality. There is no business model in giving away product for free. Pennies in web revenue are just not enough.

As a society, we need strong journalism and that doesn’t come cheap.

What I like most about this plan is that subscribers to the physical paper will get unlimited web access. In the Times’ first pay wall experiment, subscribers had to actually pay twice if they wanted web content. That sucked almost as much as the current situation — where you pay almost $500 a year to get the paper, while everyone else gets it for free online.

There are work-arounds. Surely the system will be beatable — if you want the hassle. Also, The Times’ content often ends up on the Associated Press wire service that feed potential competitors such as the NPR site.

No word on the iPhone app.

Last year, our favorite music magazine, Paste, had it’s back up against the wall. But then the fans came to the rescue.

Read how Paste cheated death in this article from Audience Development.
