Unsolicited Advice for Alternative Radio

Hey Alternative Radio, can we talk? Because there’s something that’s been on my mind for a while now, and, well, I think I need to say it, and it might be helpful. If you’re into getting some feedback…maybe?

Alternative Radio, hi. Please don’t be pissed at me for saying this.

But a lot of us have been talking, and clearly something is wrong.

It’s not that you sound bad or anything, but it just seems like you’re letting yourself get away from what you really stand for. Like you’re in a funk — the radio equivalent of sort of laying around the living room with a Playstation and pizza boxes all over the place.

You used to get out there and be so adventurous! But now it sounds like either too few people are in control of the format, or the format is on the take. It just doesn’t add up. I mean, only the AC chart moves slower than you. And it seems like you have almost an allergic reaction to anything on an independent label — and they make up more than a third of the entire music business!

I don’t know any other way to say it, so I’m just gonna say it.

The other day I was in a Qdoba that sounded better than you.

Please don’t be pissed that I said that.

But it’s true.

So here’s what I’m gonna do. Maybe some  tough love. Or maybe I’m just gonna try to be nice and give you some stuff that I found. You don’t have to like it. Seriously, I’m just trying to help…

Bully – Same

Would it kill you to play something on Sub Pop? This track is 2 minutes of straight up punk, with a great Juliana Hatfield-esque hook. Plus, she sings the word “masturbate.” Remember when Alanis got dirty with her lyrics? You used to go nuts for that stuff! C’mon, just take a listen…

NoMBe – Bad Girls

So he’s a producer based in L.A. and his Godmother is, get this, Chaka Khan. Fer realz! That’s what you kids say now, right? Fer Realz? Totes!

Yumi Zouma – December

If the first two are too edgy, let me leave you with this one from NZed-ers Yumi Zouma. Super pleasant, yet still kind of hip. And it’s called December, so it’s timely! ‘Cause that’s the month that’s coming up right after this one!

Editor’s Note: Yes we take advertising from labels, but we were not paid to pimp any of the above songs. We just like them.
