FMQB’s Jack Barton reports that attendance is running ahead of last year, and the main hotel is sold out. But there’s still plenty of room for you at the longest-running Adult Rock radio conference…

It survived the Gavin Report, Radio and Records, and continues under Friday Morning Quarterback — the annual gathering of AAA Radio and Music Industry types in Boulder, Colorado.

Grace Potter at The Fox, 2010

With a theme of creativity, this year’s event will kick off Wednesday, August 10 with radio industry veteran Dave Benson interviewing music industry veteran Tom “Grover” Biery.

Then over the next three nights and days, artist showcases will range from longtime friends like Lindsey Buckingham and the Bodeans to up-and-comers such as Devotchka and Cults.

This year will feature a twist as two accomplished actors, Jeff Bridges and Rebecca Pidgeon, will take the stage to show their musical skills.

Robert Randolph at The Fox, 2010

Inevitably one or more acts break out of this conference, with Dave Matthews and David Gray being two of the many names to do so in the almost 20-year run of the AAA Conference.

Who will break out this year is anybody’s guess, but we’re guessing one of them will be Austin guitar wiz Gary Clarke, Jr.

FMQB’s Jack Barton is expecting a bigger crowd than last year, with registrations already outpacing 2010. Fence-sitters should note that reduced-rate online registration ends Friday. After that, walk-up registration is available.

A few months back we posted an interview with Keane’s Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice Oxley shot during FMQB’s Triple A Conference in Boulder, Colorado.

With the single My Shadow still climbing the airplay charts, and nearly 7500 views logged on the interview, we thought we’d circle back to see what the research might say about Keane’s audience.

As expected, it leans female, but perhaps less expected is the upper demo strength of the band.

As seen above, three of the top four demographic segments fall into the 25-54 super-demo, led perhaps surprisingly by the 45-54 cell.

While the overall male/female split appears to be overwhelmingly female, it’s not actually the case when you subtract the youngest demos. Keane has a following with 13-24 year old females, but puts up virtual goose eggs with young males.

If looking at just adults, it’s more of a 60/40 female-male split — with the male 45-54 segment actually the third largest cell in terms of total views.

Here’s a look at men as a subset of the total views, by demo:

In a nutshell, for radio stations looking to attract adult women without alienating the men, fanbase data suggests Keane could be your band.

Here’s the interview from Boulder if you previously missed it:

The idea was apparently induced, at least in part, by Jameson’s Irish Whiskey.

Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin cooked up the idea of a alt-country sounding side project. With help from The Killers’ Ronnie Vannucci, Mumford and Sons’ Country Wilson, and others, Mt. Desolation was born.

A significant departure from the sound of Keane, Mt. Desolation has just enough twang to land in the Americana bin — if you can have a British Americana band.

The band will do a short tour starting October 18 in Los Angeles– opening for Mumford and Sons.

Check this acoustic performance video for the first track, Bitter Pill:

Keane closed out three nights of great music at the Fox Theater as part of FMQB’s Triple A Radio Conference, and it was a pleasure to see a band that is largely a stadium act in such relatively intimate quarters.

Having seen them for the first time a few years back as they opened for U2, the growth was apparent – especially with singer Tom Chaplin looking and sounding better than ever.

Keane's Tom Chaplin was in fighting shape for the U.S. tour for Night Train.

Chaplin’s new golf-centric lifestyle appears to be paying dividends as looks to have dropped 15 pounds since the last time we saw him.

We were lucky enough to catch up with Tom and chief songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley alongside Boulder Creek for a quick chat about Night Train, collaborating with K’Naan, the new single My Shadow, and future plans.

Check out the clip, then embed it into your station site or blog.

Bonus! Keep an eye out for a cameo appearance by “Lucky”– the three-legged dog…

Also worth a look is the official fan-made video for My Shadow. The clip was created by Elmira Temirgaliyeva — a fan from Almaty, the largest city in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan.

Keane’s Tom Chaplin is back in fighting shape — his new addiction is golf– as the band readies for the release of a new EP — part of Universal’s new pricing scheme. Check out a video of the new single…

Adult Rock favorites Keane are teeing up their new release — an 8-song “EP” called Night Train which comes in May.

With the industry struggling with the album concept in every way, Universal labels are experimenting with a new pricing structure with CDs costing between $6 and $10. With that pricing structure comes the return of the EP or min-album. Artists will deliver fewer songs (usually 8), and likely deliver new sets of songs more often. (At our parent company Media Mechanics, we have seen first hand research supporting this concept and have wondered why it has taken labels so long to re-visit the EP concept.)

Keane’s first single from Night Train is Stop for a Minute, featuring Somali rapper K’Naan who has a huge hit on his hands with Waivin’ Flag– the theme song for the 2010 World Cup.

Check out an acoustic version of Stop for a Minute, performed for The Sun newspaper in the U.K.:
