It is one of the coolest attention-getters ever created– Record Store Day. It’s the day that reminds us that having people in your neighborhood who actually care about curating and supporting music is a very good thing. And for the fortunate few who still have a great indie record store nearby, you’re in fro a treat.

Started in 2007 by Chris Brown, the guy who runs Bull Moose Records in Maine, Record Store Day has grown into something amazing, and fully supported by the label and management community.

In addition to the annual April event, last year they added a Black Friday sales promotion as well.

Amazing releases for RSD 2011 include a 10″ vinyl release of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep remix, complete with a B-side of the track recorded live at WXPN/Philadelphia’s World Cafe. There will be vinyl singles from R.E.M. and a 3-disc live set from Crowded House that chronicles their recent North American tour. Or how about a previously unreleased track from Derek and the Dominos on 7″ vinyl?

Scores of stores will also feature live in-store performances and signings. TV on the Radio, Regina Spektor, and My Morning Jacket are just a few names participating.

Bated breath in this household as one of our all-time faves Neil Finn has brought back his 7 Worlds Collide project.

Seven years after the original concert, Finn called in original members Johnny Marr, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway, Lisa Germano, and others, but this time also invited Jeff Tweedy and other Wilcos — and even drafted KT Tunstall, who happened to be on her honeymoon in New Zealand.

Finn invited the crew to NZ over Christmas and New Year’s, and unlike the first go-round in 2001, when they only performed live, this time they went into the studio.

The result is a double album – The Sun Came Out. The project benefits Oxfam.

A full 20 different musicians contributed, including the kids — Liam and Elroy Finn, plus Spencer Tweedy and Nile Marr.

First up will be “Hazel Black,” with KT Tunstall on vocals (concert video below).
